Repsol

Información detallada

The story of Repsol begins not with a founder, but with a state. In 1927, Spain created CAMPSA, a company to manage the country’s petroleum monopoly. For decades, various state-controlled entities managed Spain’s energy assets. This collection of companies was consolidated in 1987 by the Instituto Nacional de Hidrocarburos (INH) into a single entity: Repsol S.A. The name was borrowed from a popular lubricant brand, chosen for its recognition and ease of pronunciation. A pivotal moment arrived in 1989 when Repsol began its privatization with an initial public offering, a process completed in 1997 when the Spanish government sold its final stake. Now a publicly-traded company, Repsol looked to expand internationally. In 1999, it made a significant move by acquiring a majority stake in Argentina’s state-owned oil company, YPF, dramatically increasing its global footprint and reserves. This chapter took a sharp turn in 2012 when the Argentine government nationalized a 51% stake in YPF, a major blow to Repsol’s operations, for which it was later compensated. Today, Repsol is navigating the global energy transition. It was the first in its industry to set a net-zero emissions target for 2050. A key recent event was the 2022 strategic partnership with US investor EIG, which acquired 25% of Repsol’s upstream (exploration and production) B2B for $4.8 billion. This deal highlights the value of its traditional assets while funding its shift to a multi-energy company and sets the stage for a potential US IPO of the upstream unit from 2026 onward.
