Terralayer AG is a Swiss-based energy flexibility provider founded in 2022 by Philipp Man and Ludwig Wurlitzer, focused on the German market. The company develops, owns, operates, and aggregates a portfolio of grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). The core of its B2B is a proprietary, cloud-like software platform that virtualizes these assets to offer «flexibility as a service.» This model allows a diverse client base—including utilities, grid operators, power traders, and large consumers like data centers—to access flexible energy capacity for durations from 15 minutes to 15 years without owning the physical infrastructure. The founders, Philipp Man (CEO) and Ludwig Wurlitzer, previously co-founded the luxury online marketplace Chronext. After a decade in e-commerce, they shifted their focus to the energy sector, aiming to address the grid instability caused by the increasing integration of renewable energy sources. Their B2B model is designed to solve the intermittency of renewables by providing dispatchable power to balance supply and demand. For asset owners, Terralayer’s platform offers a way to optimize capacity and secure more stable returns by connecting them to multiple optimizers and offtakers. Terralayer has secured development agreements for over 5GW of battery capacity and had its first asset, trlyr1, operational since May 2023. The company has attracted significant investment from venture capital firms such as Creandum, Earlybird, Picus Capital, and Norrsken VC, as well as infrastructure investor RIVE Private Investment. This funding is aimed at accelerating the deployment of its battery asset base in Germany.
